Derek Christie

Derek is a Professional Geologist with over 23 years of experience across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin in both Conventional and Unconventional reservoir exploration and development.  Derek is the Vice President, Exploration and Geosciences at Crescent Point Energy and has been with the company since 2007. He has worked in the oil and gas industry since 1991, having held a variety of technical and management roles with companies such as Shelter Bay Energy, Mission Oil and Gas Inc., StarPoint Energy Ltd., Vintage Petroleum Canada Inc. and Rio Alto Exploration Ltd.


Mr. Christie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of Calgary and is a member of both the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan.

George is president & principal consultant of geos.  He has more than 40 years’ experience in the energy industry worldwide—in upstream operations, energy and management consulting, regulation and teaching—at technical, managerial, and executive levels.  George is an instructor at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary—and delivers industry short courses in all aspects of energy resources, development, and markets globally to industry and governments.

He has served on the Boards of junior oil & gas companies and the governance bodies of three of his professional associations and societies.  He is a registered professional geoscientist (PGeo) in both  Alberta and British Columbia, an elected Councillor with APEGA, and is president of Geoscientists Canada.

George has a BSc (London) and an MSc (McMaster).  He graduated from both the Senior Executive Management program at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and the Institute of Corporate Directors education program. 

Dr. Brad Hayes

Brad is President of Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd., a consulting firm engaged by industry, government agencies, and legal and financial organizations, to address conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon exploration and development. Under Brad’s direction, PRCL has developed particular expertise in the geology of unconventional hydrocarbons.  PRCL has completed several regional assessments of tight gas and shale gas prospectivity in western and northern Canada, including the Horn River Basin, Montney, and Duvernay plays, and regionally in Yukon and Northwest Territories.  Brad has also directed a number of studies addressing water resources for the unconventional oil and gas industry, in both deep saline and shallow non-saline aquifers.
Brad holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Alberta, and a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto.  He gained 15 years of industry experience with various companies including Shell and Canadian Hunter, before joining PRCL in 1996.  Brad is a Professional Geologist registered in Alberta and B.C., and currently serves on APEGA Council.  He is also an active member of the CSPG (serving as its President in 2001), AAPG, and GAC, and was elected as a Fellow of Geoscientists Canada in 2014.
Andrea Hood

Andrea Hood has almost twenty years’ experience in meeting the information needs of the oil and gas industry. She joined geoLOGIC systems in 1997 and currently holds the position of Vice President Sales & Business Development. She is responsible for all customer facing departments in the company including Customer Experience, Customer Solutions, Sales and Sales Liaison.

She emigrated to Canada in 1996 from Germany, after completing a Business Degree in Accounting and Hotel Management and, on arriving in Canada, joined VIRTUAL Computing Services. Following the acquisition of VIRTUAL by geoLOGIC in 1997, Andrea took over as Administrative Manager prior to transitioning into an Account Manager role. Successive increases in responsibility led to her current position which she assumed in 2007.

Andrea is a member of the CSPG, CSEG, CSUR and Associate member with the SEG. She has held a number of volunteer positions including CSPG Finance Director, CSEG Representative on the JACC committee, and has chaired various positions at the Annual Joint Conventions of CSEG, CSPG and CWLS.


Joanne McNichol

Joanne McNichol is a Business Development and Completions Professional with over 30 years energy industry experience with both operating companies and in the service sector.  Prior to joining NCS as Director of Strategic Business, Joanne contracted as a multi-stage completions consultant with Smith, Schlumberger and Petro China as well as participated in the development of the CBM play with Pengrowth Energy.  Joanne served as Manager of Business Development and Marketing for Frac Source, Inc., Stimulation and Cementing Technical Professional with Halliburton Energy Services Canada and Completions coordinator with PanCanadian Petroleum.  She is a recognized SPE author and recipient of numerous awards in recognition of her instrumental role in promoting innovative  technology exchanges with SPE, HART and CSUR.

Jim is currently Vice-President Geosciences & Technology for Painted Pony Petroleum. He has 35 years of diversified E&P experience. Previously, Jim held executive positions with Result Energy, Encal Energy and Stampeder Exploration. He holds a Master’s degree in Hydrogeology/Engineering Geology plus an Honours Certificate from the Canadian Securities Institute. He is a Past-President of the CSPG and a member of APEGA.

Melanie Popp, P.Eng.

Melanie has spent her career chasing the next new and exciting play in unconventional resources.  After graduating with a degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 2000, she went to work on a fracturing crew in Longview, Texas where the first Barnett Shale wells were being stimulated.  Along the way, she has also worked with tight gas sands in Medicine Hat, CBM resources in Alberta, shale gas in NEBC and the world class Montney and Duvernay assets in the WCSB.  Wanting to bridge the gap between academia and industry, she also completed her Masters of Petroleum Engineering in 2015.  Her love of hydraulic fracturing lead her to create her new company, 306 Energy Consultants, which focuses on bringing value through completion optimization and hydraulic fracture design.
Melanie is also an advocate for diverse and inclusive workplaces, having worked with the Women in APEGA committee, MentorUP Calgary, and Women of SPE.

Wally has over 30 years of broad engineering experience in the oil and gas industry – with both operating and service companies.  Prior to being appointed Director of Industry and Government Relations with Calfrac, Wally was Chief Engineer, Global Services with the company.  From the operating side, Wally has over twenty years of production engineering, well completions and workover experience, complemented by several years of production operations, midstream operations, business development and acquisitions/divestiture activity. This experience was gained with BP, both in Canada and the UK North Sea, and with other operators in Europe and the Former Soviet Union. Wally has a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.  Currently, he is a Director and Chairman of the CSUR Board of Directors.

Kellen Foreman

Kellen Foreman P.Eng - Senior Manager of Regulatory and Government Relations, Encana Corporation


Kellen has 15 years of experience practicing as an Engineer in the upstream oil and gas industry. Prior to becoming a Senior Manager of Regulatory and Government Relations at Encana, Kellen first started out gaining valuable field experience that later served him well as a Production, Completion and Drilling Engineer.  Over the last 5 years Kellen has spent a great deal of time working to advance industry policy and regulatory issues on a number of broad topics covering the fiscal, operational and environmental aspects of the oil and gas business.  In that time Kellen has also had the fortune of participating in a 1 year secondment at CAPP gaining valuable experience and creating contacts with various governments, regulators and academia that have served him well.  Kellen has a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

Bill Whitelaw is president and CEO of the JuneWarren-Nickle’s Energy Group, one of North America’s largest integrated energy information services companies. In this role, he oversees the production of a diverse suite of information products, ranging from the Daily Oil Bulletin and Oilweek Magazine, to specialized data and research tools to GIS mapping solutions. Bill serves on many industry boards. He is currently a director and secretary of the Canadian Heavy Oil Association and chairman of the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame. Bill is a graduate of Loyalist College and Queen’s University and holds a master’s degree in communication studies from the University of Calgary
